Dmerit is the pairing of Ghostly alum Bernard Farley aka Outputmessage, with DC musician/producer/DJ Miguel Lacsamana aka Micah Vellian. After dissolving their first collaboration, Person, the two decided to revisit a “side project” idea they had. They pulled from their common interests in French house, Disco, Soul and Pop to arrive at an initial template. Using their two monthly DJ nights, FLAT OUT! and MARQUIS, they further honed their sound and eventually formed Dmerit--a name inspired by their day jobs as teachers and a reference to those pesky hall monitors who kept chanting “Demerit, Demerit!” from The Ramones’ movie, Rock and Roll High School.

 

Last year they released a number of unofficial remixes into the blogosphere, including a rocking remix of Michael Jackson’s “P. Y. T.” and an explosive remix of Madonna’s “4 Minutes” that got play by the likes of Dave Nada, Will Eastman and Hip-hop Dan. Later they put out official remixes for Karoshi Bros. (“Vive La Difference” trainspotted by the likes of Shawn Caesar and Scottie B), The Gay Blades (“O Shot” which will be featured on EA Sports’ upcoming “Need For Speed Nitro”), and Triobelisk (“Xrystal Eye.”)

 

The duo finally debuts some original tracks on the “Stuck On You” EP. The dizzying title track, which blends a cut-up string-laced disco stomper with lush synthesizers and Micah Vellian’s bass guitar, has already impressed DJs and audiences alike on dancefloors in DC and beyond. “Girls and Make-up” is a layered funk and disco workout where a female vocal whimsically sings the title to serenely playful effect. “Audobons” mixes an ornate 6/4 instrumentation with rich bass synths and percussion to make an unexpected and mesmerizing twist on the disco house sound. Finally, on “Stuck On You (Outputmessage Remix)”, Farley re-works the original, giving the synth parts and bass guitar a more prominent role while adding a stadium-sized vocal crescendo.

 

Dmerit has managed to gain some notoriety with their remixes. The first out of three EPs, “Stuck On You” merely marks the beginning of what is yet to come from this eclectic duo.
